Tutoring in English requires sustained practice in essential skills. Each week, our sessions will include opportunities to practice how to understand a range of texts, to analyze the effects of an author’s choices, to provide greater focus and organization to thinking and writing, and to write effectively. With one-on-one guidance, you will develop a set of approaches that can be applied in each of the high stakes assessment tasks in IB English:

• HL Essay. 

 

Sessions will also allow you to develop a stronger grasp of the IB’s approach to the study of Language and Literature.

 

Unlocking understanding requires examining the nature of Areas of Exploration, Concepts, and the Learner’s Portfolio.

TOK Essay

 

The TOK Essay presents a unique set of challenges for you as an IB Student. It is a one-time task worth 66% of your final grade in the course. You may not have had opportunities to complete formative assignments that give you confidence in your approach to the task. It’s also common to feel intimidated by the TOK Essay Titles. Your TOK teacher may not be experienced in the course or in giving guidance and feedback. 

 

I’ll work with you at the key stages of the process to help guide your independent work in completing the TOK Essay assessment:

 

• Choosing an TOK Essay title that matches your understanding and experiences

• Planning an essay structure that allows you to meet the expectations of the assessment criteria

• Researching the content required to support your argument

Success in the TOK Exhibition requires a clear, thoughtful approach to linking each of the components — the IA prompt, the objects/images, and the commentary that connects these elements. Advice, feedback, and guidance on navigating the process can be invaluable in performing well.

 

I’ll work with you to unlock your thinking about your work in the course and its links to your experience of the world. Shaping your thinking in a way that clearly addresses the Exhibition assessment criteria will allow you to approach the task with confidence. The Extended Essay stands out among IB assessments. It is designed to be completed outside of the subject structure of the rest of the Diploma Programme. There is no accompanying class to provide opportunities to complete formative tasks that offer feedback and build confidence. All of the key choices — subject, topic, focus, etc. — are, ultimately up to you. It’s not surprising that you may feel overwhelmed by the demands the EE places on you. I’ve spent eight years as an IB Examiner for Group One (English) Extended Essays, reading hundreds of student essays. I’ve also worked with dozens of students as mentor as they completed their researching, planning, drafting, and revising.  

 

I will work with you to help you navigate the process of completing your English Extended Essay. I will provide you with focused advice on the practical steps you can take to approach your work with the self-confidence required to do your best on the project:
